Actually, I'm not sure that's wrong. At least the Wings part.

I've been tracking overall organizational efficiency for a couple years. One of the ways I've done this is by tracking total points each team earns each year and then looking at the average point that team has earned since the beginning of the 30 team league (2000-01 season). Detroit is far and away the best team in the league by that metric, averaging 103.5 points per season.

However, another thing that I did recently was to compile a 3 season rolling average of total points (meaning the average of 2005-06, 2006-07 & 2007-08 seasons, followed next by the average of 2006-07, 2007-08 & 2008-09, etc.). By taking rolling averages, it single season variations where a team finished way higher or lower than they should have.

Here's Detroit's 3 season averages since the lockout:

2005-08: 117.3
2006-09: 113.3
2007-10: 109.7
2008-11: 106.0
2009-12: 102.7
2010-13: 100.6
2011-14: 96.9
2012-15: 96.2
2013-16: 95.3

Detroit is a sinking ship. No other team comes close to this level of steady decline year after year. Even Edmonton has occasionally seen an increase in their total point rolling average.

Based on this data, I don't have much confidence in Ken Holland. I doubt they will make a GM change until they start missing the playoffs, but they will probably start missing the playoffs soon unless Holland makes some drastic changes.

If I can figure out a way to make all my data (along with the graphs) available in a Google Spreadsheet, I'll do that.
