Even in the golden age of cinema remakes were abundant. Tarzan (remade in 1984 and again this year), A Christmas Carol, and The Great Gatsby were remade several times in the 20s through the 40s.

It's not a new phenomenon. I get that people feel their childhoods are being tainted by awful versions of their favourite franchises, but I stopped caring awhile ago.
