A way of life that doesn't exist any longer.

If the First Nations do nothing with their land, people complain that they're lazy and just living on handouts from the government. If they want to take advantage of the realities of life in the 21st Century and put that land to use in a way that has greater value is today's world, people complain that they're not using the land the way it was intended to be used.

Treaty 7 was signed almost 140 years ago. Victoria was still the Queen of England at the time (and still had more than 2 decades left in her reign). Canada was only 10 years old. The first European settler had arrived in the Calgary area less than 5 years earlier. Fort Calgary was only 2 years old. The Canadian Pacific Railway wouldn't reach Calgary for another 5 years.

No one who signed the treaty could ever have imagined the world that exists today.
