I think most fans would agree that there are definitely two parts to Death Note: before L dies, and after. While the show as a whole is still very good, the first 25 episodes or so are much better than the last 12. You could probably stop now and be no worse for it, without spoiling much, because it comes predictable.

L was the best character, and his replacement isn't nearly as fun.

It's like the writer painted himself into a corner by offing him and had to rush to quickly wrap everything up neatly.
