His job is not exclusively for video review. He will be constantly on the line with the coaches, giving them a different view of things. Some things you simply can't see from ice level, and that's the advantage of having someone up top. I assume a part of his job(as well as Pringle's) would be to get the video ready as well for players/coaches during intermission and addressing adjustments we can make to be more successful. As a result, I don't see any problems with Gelinas being the eye in the sky.
PS: There was a very good video made with Hitchcock and his staff showing the constant communication with the person they have sitting up top. Unfortunately, I couldn't find it as I forget what it was called.
