Tactically this really hurts the argument that an armed civilian would have been able to stop this. The armed police were overwhelmed by one guy with a long rifle and a ton of ammunition. Those poor brave cops went towards the threat and not away from it, but they were mismatched by a guy with a long rifle a 30 round magazine and a weapon that wasn't designed for hunting or sport shooting but to kill people.
Make no mistake that's primarily what these kind of rifles are designed for. The poor ignorant bastards who hide behind the argument that these are for sport shooting or for hunting need to basically stfu.
Can you imagine if a poorly trained civilian with a hopped up adrenal response or 10 or 20 went up against this killer, we wouldn't be talking about 5 dead cops, we'd be talking about 30 dead civilians.
This is a horrific result by a angry guy who was given the means to give his anger physical manifestation thanks to the stupidity of the constitution of the United States, where the founding fathers after a day of brilliance probably sat around with a beer and said "We should give people the right to bear arms, and entrench it"
Even the founding fathers would probably quail and recant the "right to bear arms" if they had the foresight and creativity to see the evolution of the personal fire arm. More killing power fired faster and easier and no harder then dipping your feather topped pen in an ink well.
Well we need to stand up to an oppressive government they said, with well armed militias, thanks a lot Britain by the way. But the difference between civilian weapons and military weapons back there in the day before the repeating rifle and gattling guns to machine guns and laser guided munitions was zero. You're average battalion of soliders was armed just as well as your average group of drunken righteous angry farmers and town folk.
Does anyone here actually think that if the American government decided to put the hammer down, that these well armed and righteous militia groups would last longer then it takes some 18 year old army private to rip the tab off of his government issued beer and chortle "Its miller time" after mowing down a few hundred angry fat white militia members with his .50 caliber chain gun mounted on top of a Bradley Fighting Vehicle.
This whole thing is pointless and stupid and the second amendment has become a suicide pact backed my a power hungry lobby group supported by a money hungry gun manufacturing consortium.
No a freaking armed civilian isn't going to save the day in some random shooting incident. He's either going to stand there and piss his pants, or he's going to go hero and gun happy and probably do a better job of killing innocent people then some angry thrill killer hopped up on Crystal Meth and bad intentions.
Let me put it this way, this cop killer had every advantage last night, he had intention, he had ammunition, he clearly knew the area and he knew, he knew that the cops on the scene were outgunned by him, and he took advantage, and killed cops who had been lavishly trained and equip. Even after the initial shootings, he held the cops at bay for hours.
So what's some fat white guy hopped up on visions of medals and killin them thar bad guy going to do that the cops can't?
Or 5
Or 10
Or 20.
the name of the game is going to change again. This deranged angry social outcast has shown the way, he knew he wasn't going to get out alive and had no interest in that. Some where there's somebody or somebodies that are watching this on TV, probably in his crappy apartment where he walks up in the morning to a double helping of "Life ain't fair" and "F$$$ the po-olice" and he's thinking, I can do that, and probably better.
Meanwhile across the nation, the police are breaking this down and saying "never again" and they're going to up their police presence, and arms and armor, and they're going to ask for more laws to protect themselves and the civilian population. Then idiots like Trump and the radical right will scream "We can head this off by arming everyone" and the radical left will stand up and say "Oppressive government taking away our rights" and the mega Right will hold their AR-15's and AK-47's up and say "See we told you the guberment is taking over and they're going to take away my unnecessary and stupid people killing rifle."
And once again lost in this whole debate is "Why in the blue f%%% are we allowing these weapons out on the street", "how in the godamned hell is this making anything any safer", and "Why in the frack aren't we focusing on punishing the gun makers and gun sellers who are putting these weapons into peoples hands with slick heroic based messaging and advertising"
I think Charleton Heston in "Planet of the Apes" screamed out "Its a Mad House, a Mad House" and it certainly is, and trust me for all the good that Heston did for civil rights in the US, the irony doesn't escape me that he was one of the biggest proponents of individual fire arm rights during his life"
