If you didn't talk to Gillies, then a guy who you talked to who apparently talked to Gillies doesn't make Gillies your source.
I think that's the point he's getting at. Hearing it from someone who may have heard it from source is not the same, not even relatively, as hearing it from the source.
One of the key tenants of good journalism is sitting on information until you can verify it. Not shooting out anything you hear. Keep at it, just keep a few of the "heard from someone who heard from someone" things in your pocket.
What you choose not to report can go much further towards your credibility than what you choose to report.
