Knowing how prepared Treliving is for everything, my guess is he had two plans going into this depending on how things played out.

There's a few things that were up in the air: Next year's cap needed to be set; a goaltending tandem needed to be acquired; and the draft and free agency had to take place.

The worst case scenario would be: the cap doesn't go up; they acquire a goalie tandem with a high cap hit; they don't draft any players who might be NHL-ready; and they have to overpay for talent on July 1. If things had played out that way, they may have decided to go for cheaper bridge deals for Johnny and Monahan.

Things ended up playing out generally well: The cap went up; they acquired 2 goalies with reasonable cap hits; Tkachuk could be NHL-ready; and they didn't drastically overpay anyone on July 1. As a result, I suspect we'll see them both signed to long-term deals soon. I believe they both came to town for Stampede week last year, so that might be when everything falls into place.
