Flames have smart money invested in all three positions. The oilers lack elite talent on D, and it has been a glaring problem that leads to a dysfunctional team.
The other big difference is having young cheap talent to fill out the lineup. Do I think the flames are the best in the league at this? By no means. But the oilers are the absolute worst drafting and developing team in the NHL, and you can't pay premium players and just hope the other half of your lineup isn't terrible. They consistently have been and will be.
By buying premium free agent forward with term, Edmonton has in essence forced themselves into exposing their most glaring weaknesses.

So what should the Oilers have done? Not signed Lucic? Kept Hall and not got a Dman of any kind? Continue to be afraid to make a move and waste McDavid's time like they've done with Hall, Eberle and RNH?
