It's a free market. If there was a unmet appetite out there for the serious news and thorough journalism, you would think someone could make a lot of money by providing it. There are still some serious news outlets out there. The New York Times. PBS news hour. The Economist. They're not exactly setting the world on fire with their audience numbers. The truth is that the market for that kind of sober, high-brow news is vanishingly small.
It's certainly an interesting question. People the US and even in the UK are significantly less educated than Canadians on average. I think this is reflected in respective media landscapes.
