I understand the aversion to NHL teams not wanting to take chances on KHL flight risks, but I'm not sure it's really a character flaw.

It doesn't make him a bad person but if his goal is to play in the NHL then he should probably be willing to develop the way the team asks. I don't personally think Dallas is handling him well but he's kind of tied their hands a bit, things might be different if he spent the majority of his first season in the AHL learning the NA game. If his goal is to maximize his earnings early in his career then maybe he should go play in the KHL. Either way this semi yearly Nichushkin KHL watch is a distraction for the team.
