I think I might have been close to winning the costume contest at the party I went to, as I literally had dozens of people coming up to me telling me that I should win (the prize was a bunch of things including hundreds of dollars in gift certificates from places like Birks Jewelers, a day at the spa, etc). I went as a crow's nest--no particular reason other than that I had the materials to make it, and I didn't start planning the costume until about three hours before the event. I threw it together with this huge wicker orb (two feet in diameter) that I got at Ikea, combined with a fairly realistic crow that I made last year, and tacked sticks and leaves all over it. It looked pretty bizarre, and the fact that it stayed balanced was a marvel of engineering.
The guy who won had a jelly-fish costume that was made of a clear umbrella and a bunch of bubblewrap. It did actually look fantastic.
