Just because you don't qualify him doesn't mean he walks. It just means he's a UFA. He likes the team and he wants to come back, the only difference is now you're buying him on the open market rather than having his cost dictated to you by an arbitrator based on a blurred account of events.

Its a one year deal. Its not ideal. But its a short term thing and if he struggles, you move on next year. (I highly doubt he gets $3.5 million anyways - Mike Hoffman was in a similar age range last year and had 27 goals and got $2M)
I'd rather that than sign some free agent for 3 years at a similar rate (see Raymond, Mason).
