Besides the thrill a minute action in the first one, the personal interactions in the first one were outstanding. Your right Jeff Goldblum and Hirsch had a really good chemistry in the first movie, you almost felt like they were father and son. Even Goldblum and Will Smith was really good. The President and his aide in the first movie was also really well done. I really wonder why they didn't try to bring Mae Whitman back as the presidents daughter, she's a pretty outstanding actress and would have fell into the age group better. I guess they wanted to hot blond instead. Robert Loggia was just the perfect guy in the first movie to play a Marine General and the foil and conscience of the president. They also really could have bought Adam Baldwin back as the main general replacing Loggia and it would have made sense.
