It was very....OK. Nothing special, which is too bad after 20 years of anticipation essentially. Action was good. CGI was well done. But the characters were so...meh. I felt absolutely nothing for them. Even the recurring characters. None of them had the soul of the first movie.
I think it was the total lack of relationships between characters that made it so bland. In the old movie you had all these great interactions:
- Goldblum vs. Pullman
- Goldblum and his dad
- Goldblum vs. ex
- Will Smith and his family
- Randy Quaid and his family
- The first lady and Vivica Fox
They did a great job of establishing these relationships. In the new movie, Goldblum had so little interaction with his dad. Pullman and his daughter barely spoke, and nothing was mentioned about their relationship or her mom. The rivalry between Hemsworth and Will Jr. was so forced. Vivica literally said maybe one or two lines on the phone to her son before she bit the dust. Nothing about these characters made me give a damn. I think the only thing that made me feel anything was Pullman's nod to Robert Loggia.
Edit: The nerdy guy and the African dude were actually pretty funny. I liked that duo.
