If there's any coolness to signing an extension this summer it will be from Elliot's camp. The Flames should, and likely are all in to try and get a reasonable extension signed this off season.
He's almost assuredly going to have a good season and if things start to come together for the Flames, we're easily looking at $6+, maybe even $7+ if he has a stellar season.
As fans, we should be dreaming of an extension this summer, imo. This is not a "wait and see" situation, or we'll likely be waiting and seeing which core piece moves on to make room at a later date.

No way he gets $6m, much less $7m IMO. Maybe if he's a Vezina finalist but even then, the Flames have all the leverage. He's finally nailed down a starting job in the NHL at 31, I think he's going to be reasonable. It's not like there is a huge market for starting goalies out there anyway, and I'm sure Elliott and his agent are well aware of that.
If they signed him today, I would be disappointed at anything over 5 years and $4.5m AAV. He looks good, and I'm excited about him, but they can't get carried away and I don't think they will. I think something gets done this summer. Both the team and the player will be looking for stability and will both be motivated to get it worked out. Elliott isn't getting younger, I doubt he's going to risk future earnings in case this season doesn't go well for whatever reason.
