They are likely going to make the floor even without Datsyuk. They still have multiple RFA d-men they need to sign, Doan, and a few UFAs to fill out the roster. They really didn't need Datsyuk's contract to reach the floor.

The Vitale info sells me a little to your point of view, it still feels like to me they could have gotten much more for taking on Datsyuk's contract.
