I'm with you, I think the counter argument though is, some might argue the Flames have 3 number 1 D-men.
Brodie will be our new number 1 (if he's not already), Gio's is fantastic as a number two, do you really need another potential #1, or in a cap world, are you better to go out and try and replace Hamilton with something else and fill a preceived void up front?
For the record, I'm not there myself, based on the returns floating around I'd love to keep Hamilton, but the above is the logic behind entertaining a trade with him.

If the logic is we can't have 3 number one defencemen then I think you have to trade Giordano. He's got a bigger contract, is older and will likely be declining just when Hamilton is hitting his prime. For the record I don't want to trade either of Gio or Hamilton.
