No it didn't, the country was falling apart, I know I lived there.
Let me tell you the story of the B series engine developed after the war by Austin Motors, it was a nice little 4 cylinder that they developed in the late fourties, engineers from Nissan came over to learn about car production and liscensed the design, it was one of the foundations of their rebuilding after the war, eventually Nissan designed better engines and by the late sixties was just using the venerable A frame for a few delivery vehicles.
Austin, by now called British Leyland continued to use the same engine design until they went bankrupt in the 2000's, the reason for the bankruptcy was the massive rise of import Japanese cars.
