I see so much of this as a reaction to globalization.
Western folk (mostly whites) have for generations lived an unsustainable lifestyle largely at the expense of the poor masses. Suddenly, with globalization - whether it be in the form of economic and political unions, immigration to western countries, free trade, or just Chinese millionaires buying up the Vancouver property market - westerners suddenly see their lifestyles being threatened and their places in the world receding as the competition heats up. So they close ranks, try to blame and force out the "other" however they identify it, and engage in protectionism.
Lots more upheaval to come I think.
