I think a goalie like Bishop is the exact type of player you choose to overpay on. If it takes a couple extra 2nds or whatever, you do it. The alternate scenario is we keep those picks (which MOST LIKELY won't pan out) and we still have goaltending issues. Sure Reimer won't cost anything to acquire other then cap space. But as a fan I'm in it to win games and win a cup. I think Bishop gets us closer to that goal then Reimer or Fleury does.
Bishop at 29 is the exact same age as Kipper in 2005 when he won his vezina. So the talk of him being too old doesn't jive with me. No one was saying that about Kipper at that time.
I'm of the opinion that if you're going to overpay for a player, you'd better know what you're getting and it better be a damned good one. A legit #1C, legit #1D and legit #1G are worth over paying for. Those are the types of players that win you games on their own. With goaltending being the Flames' biggest flaw right now, having a proven top 5 guy might very well be the key to pushing us over the hump and beyond and will really show the finish line to this rebuild.
Bishop is the guy I hope we get. But I'm also glad we have BT doing the negotiating. This isn't Feaster getting bent over the barrel or Sutter off his meds. Treliving wins trades, period. In fact, Yzerman should feel lucky to get anything back.
I think if an overpayment does occur everyone here, including myself, will be kind of upset and sad about it. But comes hockey season, when we see a stabilising force in net and the ripple effect it will have through the lineup, I think we'll all be pretty darn happy we have him. Either way I trust BT to make the correct decision.
