The short term pain will not be great with a Brexit, but in the long run, the EU needs to reboot itself if not ended completely.

There are too many unique interest in the EU, and the wealth disparity between countries is too great. It made sense for the UK to be a part of the EU when their economy was rolling and they needed lots of transitory labour. Now that things are bad and the UK needs to overhaul large parts of their economy, it makes far more sense for them to have more individual control.
