The CBA has two articles that define professional experience. Both are used in determining a player's eligibility for different types of free agency. They differ only slightly, and most players would have the same status under either definition.
One of these is the most likely definition to be used by the League for the expansion draft...
This is the definition of a "Professional Season" used to determine eligibility for Group 5 & 6 Free Agency (CBA Article 10.1):
Quote:
For the purposes of the foregoing, the term "professional season" shall: (A) for a Player aged 18 or 19, mean any season in which such Player plays in eleven (11) or more Professional Games (including NHL Regular Season and Playoff Games, minor league regular season and playoff games, and games played in any European professional league, while under an SPC), and (B) for a Player aged 20 or older, mean any season in which such Player plays in one or more Professional Games (including NHL Regular Season and Playoff Games, minor league regular season and playoff games, and games played in any European professional league, while under an SPC).

This is the definition of a "Year of Professional Experience" used to determine eligibility for Group 2 Free Agency (CBA Article 10.2):
Quote:
For the purposes of this Section 10.2(a), a Player aged 18 or 19 earns a year of professional experience by playing ten (10) or more NHL Games in a given NHL Season, and a Player aged 20 or older (or who turns 20 between September 16 and December 31 of the year in which he signs his first SPC) earns a year of professional experience by playing ten (10) or more Professional Games under an SPC in a given League Year.

Under either definition, Gillies is exempt. Under the first definition, he currently has 1 year of experience (1 professional game played, age 20+); under the second, he has 0 (<10 professional games played, age 20+). Kylington should also be exempt because his European seasons were before he was under an NHL SPC.
The Flames prospects who will be impacted by the definition used are Shinkaruk and Poirier. Both played a full season in the AHL at age 19 (on contracts signed at age 18). Under the first definition, they already have played 2 pro seasons because their first AHL season counts. Under the second definition, they have 1 year of pro experience because their first AHL season doesn't count.
