And if thats the case, then trade for his rights and get this done. If you're going to argue that using a 5th or 6th round pick is stupid when you can just have him for free later, save it.
Reimer is better than any goalie we had last season. He's not the best option of goalies available by trade in talent level, but as far as value goes, he likely is.

Your options are:

- Pay a decent price for Bishop's rights, who is a UFA and will command a good salary and term in FA. Not to mention that Tampa could just decide they want to keep him and sign him, which drives up the price for him. He's the best of the group available, but not by a huge margin, and his price will be the highest (maybe not to get his rights, but overall when factoring in a new contract).

- Trade for Fleury. Making more than he's worth and will likely cost a couple of half decent draft picks at least. He's not really been much better than Reimer for the past few seasons and will cost assets to obtain and more cap for probably similar term.

- Pay Reimer as a UFA. Likely getting under 5 mil as his options are limited and CGY is his only chance at a starting role. He probably takes whatever the Flames offer him to be honest that's even in the realm of reasonable. I'd say 4 mil for 2-3 years.

So while the league may see CGYs situation and try to take advantage, there's kind of a trump card in Reimer, which makes CGY's position pretty strong if the other teams want any assets in return for their tenders. He is the option I prefer because I really think whoever we bring in is basically a stop-gap for Gillies, and I don't want to shell out assets, big $$ or big term for something that I believe we have in the pipeline in pretty short order.
