The reasoning behind going after Riemer if all other options are too costly is that we can use a cheap stop-gap until either
a) the Flames find a #1 who they feel is worth the price or
b) one of their goalies in the system are ready or
C) they find another goalie on the open market or in a forced trade situation (expansion draft right around the corner) and get a goalie for cents on the dollar.
The Flames are far from being hand-cuffed.
