I just found it a very strange comment to declare failure to get 8 years a disappointment. Why would 6 or 5 be bad for example? Seems like a very strange thing to be locked in on. 8 years is an eternity in hockey terms, how do we know at this point that locking these two in for the bulk of a decade is the smart bet at this point? And I really really like these two players for the record.

I can't speak for that poster but IMO you need to go short or long with these two. It makes no sense signing them to a contract of 5 or 6 years because it would leave Monahan a UFA at 26/27 and Gaudreau one at 27/28. At least if you go 8 years you tie up their prime years, not let them leave in the middle of them.
