The NDP has refused for months to release any study showing the economic impacts of the new tax — things like how many provincial jobs will be lost or gained, whether GDP will go up or down, the question of oil exports thriving or diving.
Premier Rachel Notley deflected or derided dozens of opposition questions in the legislature. She and her ministers implied that even asking such vile questions denies the reality of climate change.
Officials and politicians would not confirm that an updated report was ever written. But they didn’t quite deny its existence, either.
Ministers even evoked cabinet secrecy. You’d think we were asking Vladimir Putin about doping.
Finally, Deputy Premier Sarah Hoffman conceded Friday that a report might exist, although she isn’t personally aware of it.
“I’m sure there is, I’m sure it will continue to be updated. At the end of the day those assumptions will be incorporated into the budget and the fiscal plan,” she said.
With all the testiness and secrecy, the NDP has created the strong impression that it has something to hide. This is dangerous both for the government and the whole climate change policy.
That policy happens to be essential for the province — although one isn’t supposed to believe that, apparently, while also believing that serious economic questions need to be answered
