the more i'm hearing and thinking about it, gulutzan seems like a decent hire for a few reasons:

1. bt is obviously after a certain profile of coach, and judging by what he's said publicly and the names that are rumoured as the finalists, the finalists seem to be more alike than they are different. they are all supposed to be strong tacticians who can also help develop players. this is exactly what we need, and the personal differences (like background, etc.) b/w the coaches seem less important.

2. gulutzan has been in charge of some pretty good special teams. his pk was the only part of vancouver's season this year that wasn't vomit-inducing, and his pp was the top in the league in 2013-2014 (kesler credited him for that success and called him an extra intelligence on the pp).

3. gulutzan is supposed to be the most progressive mind on the vancouver staff, and he wasn't a dim jim hire.

4. this is the least important, but gulutzan has had a priot stint in the nhl, so we could hope that he has learned from his prior stint

anyway, i think my main point is that there is reason for optimism for now with any of the hires. the speculation about a bolstered associate coach position is also heartening. i hope we get to see a flames team that holds on to the puck soon.
