His minor pro coaching record is really impressive however, 3 straight years of winning percentages over .700 in the ECHL and lots of long playoff runs. In his 2 seasons as the Texas Stars head coach, he had good records and went to the finals one year.
He must have been a pretty hot commodity after those 2 AHL seasons, not unlike Travis Green is now.
I don't mind those two unsuccessful years as the Dallas Stars head coach. I like the idea that he's been through the wringer once and you hope he's made and learned from his mistakes. Sometimes that's better than the new hot shot who's never faced adversity.

I kinda agree with this, but then why doesn't Jim Playfair get another shot anywhere? If you listened to some of the experts, he's one of the better hockey minds out there, yet after his tenure with the Flames, he hasn't really been given a sniff at a head coaching job again. Is it maybe that some guys are better off as assistants than head coaches (Bowness, Martin, Crawford etc.) or is it just something to do with Playfair?
I distinctly remember hearing Sutter say that Playfair will be a head coach again somewhere in the league right after he demoted him. I wonder what happened...
