Legislator doubles down on door prizes after Orlando shooting
State Rep. Andy Holt announced a campaign fundraiser and turkey shoot last week at which he'd be giving away an AR-15 assault rifle as a "door prize." And after this weekend's mass shooting in Orlando, the deadliest one in the history of the country, in which 49 people were killed by a gunman wielding an AR-15, Holt is doubling down on his door prize, quite literally — he's now going to give away two.
Holt, who was a prime co-sponsor of this session's controversial transgender bathroom bill, posted today on Facebook about the shooting, attacking Muslims, U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen, the media, liberal democrats, and the National Security Administration:

I'm furious that I get phone calls from the media asking me if I'm still going to give away an AR-15 at our HogFest, rather than asking me how many extra firearms I'll be handing out to ensure people can protect themselves. After all, it was a bullet that stopped the terrorist. Amazing how so many seem to miss that fact. I'm furious that the NSA continues to spy on ordinary Americans like you and me, yet allows suspected terrorists to easily walk away. I'm furious that I see elected liberal democrats rushing to literally blame Republicans for this tragic attack on the LGBT community. While I am a conservative Christian, my heart literally breaks for these women and men on so many levels. I'm furious that these same liberal democrats rushing to condemn conservative Christians that may disagree with a lifestyle, simultaneously rush to defend a religion that readily hangs and massacres gays and lesbians. Ever been to a country where Muslims are the majority? If you have, you'll find gay men hanging in the streets. This is disgusting in so many ways. The media, our government, it's all literally disgusting.

I want you to arm yourselves and learn to shoot with deadly accuracy should the need arise. Protect your family. Protect yourselves. Protect your friends. Our government has made it quite clear that it is incapable of doing so. At the end of the day, it's your responsibility anyways.

Tennessee Democratic Party chair Mary Mancini has issued a statement condemning Holt:

Our hearts are with everyone in Orlando and across the world as we grieve the most-deadly mass shooting in our country’s history. The people who lost their lives were travel agents and doctors, teachers and students. They were brothers, sisters, sons and daughters. There were people enjoying a night out with friends and loved ones.
That said, we’re furious that in the wake of this tragedy, state Rep. Andy Holt is being such a reckless and irresponsible gun owner. Responsible gun owners don’t give away guns without background checks. Responsible gun owners make sure that guns are safely and securely stored to prevent access by children or irresponsible adults. Responsible gun owners don’t put guns in the hands of strangers. Andy Holt doesn’t know if he’s putting the winning raffle ticket in the hands of the next mass shooter.
We’re also furious that when 18% of all hate crimes are committed against the LGBTQ+ community, Andy Holt continues to fan the flames of hatred towards that community by making jokes that demean them and statements that blatantly define them as different, wrong, and scary.
Love will triumph over hate, it always does. But in the meantime, Andy Holt, please, just stop.
