This breed does attract idiots, but even people who raise the dog with obedience and love can have a completely unpredictable dog. My friend was telling me about a guy he knew that had a really sweet, great female pit bull. He took her to obedience classes, the off leash park (where she always behaved), and she was always around kids. Once day, on leash, she spotted a German Sheppard sticking his head out of a hole in its fence and tore out of her owners grasp, ran across the street and latched onto this other dogs neck. By the time he finally got her off of this other dog it was dead. She killed a dog who was in his own yard, completely out of the blue for no reason whatsoever. They had her put down that afternoon.
I've personally never met a mean pit bull, every dog I have met has been friendly and nice. I still think there needs to be a ban. These dogs are so unpredictable. What if it had been a kid this guys 'sweet girl' had snapped on? It's just not worth the risk.
