Maybe you misinterpreted what people were saying. All I saw anyone saying was that they pull the hose over their vehicle so they can go in on the side with less cars. No one was saying they don't know which side their gas filler was on and mistakenly go to the wrong lane and then have to pull the hose over.
If anything I would say most people don't know there's an arrow on your gas gauge because most people would just look at their tank when they bought the car.
