RDP is a protocol. RDC is the desktop connection application built into Windows that runs on top of RDP.
There is nothing wrong with RDP; however RDC is nowhere near elegant enough to provide desktop support to the myriad of devices people are using nowadays to do their jobs. What about OS X or Linux support? What about smartphones and tablets?
If I was only worried about managing servers running Windows Server software, then I'd have no complaints about using RDC, but this is not the case.
