Ended up being the jack - it's the scissor style and you need to expand it a little after it goes into its holder to lock it into place. Must have just worked itself loose as I haven't had a flat. Easiest fix ever (after spending hours trying to find it!).

To me a rattle in a car is the equivalent of someone chewing pudding 2 inches from my ear, while clipping their super thick toe-nails, and and breathing loudly through their nose that has that little booger whistle. Plus it's more distracting than doing my taxes while sending drunk texts to an ex GF.
Pretty much the worst thing in the world. Ever. And that includes the holocaust. It's worse than that.

Also in another "What are the odds?" moment. The first thing I went to to fix the rattle. Was the style of jack that you described, that you have to tighten to secure.
