In the 21-team NHL, the Smythe, Adams and Norris Divisions played intradivisional teams eight times, and the other three divisions three times.

The Patrick, however, played intradivisional opponents six or seven times, rotating each year.

It's something that can be worked around, obviously, but is not ideal.
I thought the Patrick teams played each other 7 times, rotating only the extra home game. Each team played 35 intra-division games, plus 45 against the rest. The other divisions played 32 intra-division games, plus 48 against the rest. I remember being quite young at the time, obsessed with hockey, and thinking, "Whoah... that worked out quite well".
