Outside of a few stand-outs, I don't think coaches have nearly the amount of impact on results that most fans think they do.
It does happen, from time to time, but for every Patrick Roy in Colorado, there's, well, a Patrick Roy in Colorado.
Carlyle has a Stanley Cup as a coach, and a .572 win%, after a long and illustrious NHL playing career including Norris Trophies and team captaincies.
The only thing that really holds shame in his resume is that he was the last coach to ever lose a playoff series to the Oilers.
I know the media really turned on him in Toronto (shocking, I know), but he led the Leafs to a playoff spot for the first and only time in living memory, and finished with a .500 record with a bad team.
I'd say Carlyle is a middle-of-the-road NHL coach, which is just fine by me.
