In addition to what other people said, we went to a national park (I think it was national) called the Cabrillo Monument. Go to the top where you can see out to the ocean forever, then go tide pooling at the water. It's on a military base so you have to go when it's open. Added bonus is tons of military stuff is constantly on the move. It was neat.
