Gauthier is sitting what, 12th or something for North Anerican skaters? I'm not sure then where he fits in overall when adding in European skaters, but it stands to reason he's 15-20th as a conservative guess. Realizing every team has their own internal rankings, I can't imagine there is such a discrepancy between scouts to where 6th overall is that diluted in which any team is pulling in someone perceived at 15-20 otherwise.
If Calgary wanted Gauthier, my strategy would be to target the teams who are flirting with that next ledge in selecting at the draft. There's talk of the first ledge being after the first three picks. Then the next ledge being what 6 or 8th or whatever. Ultimately it's a fairly solid hypothesis as to whom the first 5 players taken are going to be. Calgary is actually at an advantage with 6 in that they get first crack at after the perceived first obvious 5 are to go. There's no clear cut 6th player that is logically next in line after Dubois and Tkatchuk.
Instead there's about 3 maybe 4 that are kind of up in the air as to whom could go next. They're all legit prospects and everyone has their opinion and their own wish list. The one thing that 'should' be common for the teams selecting 6-8/9 is that Gauthier isn't of those 4 names. As such, Calgary should head right to the 8,9th teams and say "what will you give us to jump the line and have first crack at the next wave of talent? For an early 3rd round we can swap spots and you can be the team getting your man versus getting the leftovers."
Then at 9th or whatever, you can reach a bit and should safely get Gauthier. You don't want to be heading out of the top 10 and hoping he's around if he's your guy. But you can't reach that far at 6 and take him. At least from my perspective.

Why would you want to add an early 3rd round pick in a draft thought to be thin after pick 45 or 50? I still think you go for BPA at 6.
