Obviously we keep 6th overall in both those scenarios as well.

I don't want either of those deals. Center depth is huge. Especially high end center depth.

I wonder how bad they want to dump Clarkson's contract? If the answer is REALLY badly then maybe that's an "IN"

3rd overall
David Clarkson ($1,000,000 retained)

for

6th overall
Matt Stajan

That Clarkson deal is beyond terrible though. It's buy out proof right to the end, and comes complete with a NMC.

My only other stipulation to the above deal would be that Clarkson needs to agree in writing to waive his NMC for the purposes of any future expansion drafts. Not that he'd be taken, but just so we wouldn't be forced to protect him instead of a younger player.

He'd be more palatable at $4,250,000 per year, and he is a right shot who can play a gritty game.
I know Columbus might not be the richest team, but I think that contract harms them less than it would harm the Flames.

After the NHL draft lottery occurred, I thought Columbus would be the least likely to trade their pick out of every team in the first round. But hearing these Brown rumours certainly makes things interesting.

I agree with anyone who says the Blue Jackets don't need or want Backlund. Backlund is good, but the Blue Jackets have many 2nd line centers. They want elite skill. If Columbus did trade down, I doubt it would be very far. They surely want a very high-end prospect.

Perhaps the Flames could offer the 6th+35th, then 6th+53rd+55th, then 6th+35th+53rd, then finally 6th+35th+53rd+65th. These last offers would really only be offered if the Flames truly valued Puljujarvi. Or if they hated the idea of picking 6th as much as I do.
