Sounds like a really old mac if it still has internet explorer. I'd recommend downloading safari or firefox. You might be able to get safari by just selecting software update in the menu.
That old of a browser probably does not have support for a lot of new web technologies which is why it wouldn't work for a lot of the email type sites. A windows based computer with a browser older than 6.0 might have a lot of the same issues.
Course it could be something worse than that but I have no idea what it might be and I switched to macs after IE was trashed.
