I'm not going to disagree with your statement on Mendes but at the end of the day part of that is his own fault. As a manager you try and get on with people like Mendes, who you will very much be dealing with. Instead, he, in typical fashion alienated himself from him. So in a way he got what he deserved. Compare that to say the relationship SAF had with him.
His own personality and arrogance and inability to form relationships came back to haunt him.

Yeah...you kind of want people to be reluctant to fire you for a number of reasons. See Brad Treliving and Hartley. It had to be done but it sucked and no one was happy about it.
In this instance I think a lot of people lined up for the privilege of putting their boot to his ass out the door.
