"The sergeant, seeing de Grood wasn’t armed, didn’t fire and sidestepped a punch from the suspect."
Crazy guy, bloody, charges at cop. Cop chooses to fight, not to shoot.
Promote this guy. And whoever trained him. He has a good head on his shoulders and has a temperament that helps build a solid, respected police force. He could have fired, and I'm sure some think it would be better if he did, but I have to respect the choice he made. With limited information on hand he made the best choice.
Also, what an awful crime. But this guy is clearly insane. Awful situation.
