Lowes used to be really bad for that to the point where I could not shop there. They did not use chip technology (do they now?) and their machines would never read the mag strip on my card.

Cards seem to have a pretty short life span in my wallet for some reason, both the strips and chips both seem to quit working after a relatively short period of time.
Most devices are setup to not even accept a mag stripe if the chip doesn't work (it's a bit weird as it'll ask for the mag stripe, then fail after accepting the stripe).

I'll guess you're a BMO customer as they seem to have the worst debit cards in the world, I have to replace mine constantly.

The cards tend to get bent easily and if the chip reader slot is a bit bigger then the chip doesn't make good contact. Keep a business card with you and try putting the business card in under the card; that seems to work for me.

REALLY looking forward to debit on Apple Pay so I can stop replacing my debit card every 3 months.
