I guess if you hunt and eat the animal it makes a bit of sense, but hunting/killing as a 'sport' just doesn't seem right.

It's a way of life for many people who grew up in the Rocky Mountain region. As a kid, we literally sustained ourselves on game and fish. Not everyone grows up in $100K per year households.
You are giving the animals no credit either. They are smarter than us, in their element and unbelievable athletes.
Hunting is also a vital part of responsible game management. Ever seen a large winter kill of an overpopulated herd?
Trophy hunting is a bit of a different story, but I haven't ever really associated with anyone who hunts and doesn't put the harvested meat to good use so I can't speak to their motivations.
