Last year's core is this year's core (without Russell and Hudler)...albeit getting paid a lot more.
room for a goalie but nothing else..
The way the Flames get better over the next 2-3 years is Monahan, Gaudreau, Bennett, Hamilton getting better, and unexpected development (like happened with Brodie and Gio) where someone who is not considered core: Jankowski or the trio of 1st round picks from 2013 or 2016 #6 or Ferland all of the sudden forces their way into the core.
Also if Jon Gillies turns out to be the real deal #1 goalie that can win some NHL games on his own.
