I think it is blatantly obvious that
Hurley Sam will play a very major role in the fight against the White Walkers and he will find some very vital information while reading at the Citadel that they will need to defeat the White Walkers. I think this has been obvious since the moment he started finding information about the Watch and the White Walkers, from the 3 blasts of the horn, to knowing about dragon glass. Also I think this scene shows the continuing transformation of Sam, when he was first introduced there is not a chance he would have gone back home and now he is bringing his girl and "their" child home to his family. That is an absolutely major development in his character because not long ago he cringed when Stannis just mentioned his father.
