I think his mistake was actually building his teams as if he was still the head coach. IMO as a GM his biggest flaw was that he never seemed to be on the same page as his coach in regards to what their coaching styles needed asset wise, even with Brent. In fact the closest he got to being in sync was with Keenan.
So to your point, in that vain what really should have done is hire himself, or stop managing as if he was the coach.
