You also have to take into account the fact that the VP pick is also, ideally, a succession plan. That was the biggest problem with Biden, and why Castro is thought by some to be on the short list.
The problem with Kaine is that he's just kind of there. He's not going to hurt you, but he's not a particularly interesting or energizing guy to put on your ticket. Deval Patrick makes all kind of sense to me, in that he can put on at least as good of a show as Trump while also being a pretty likable character. No swing state votes there, though.
Franken has always just seemed really whiney to me.
