There's probably extraneous circumstances. Sticking to rigid authoritative rules might be counter productive, I can definitely see the merit in feeling begrudged when they are performing.
The season will naturally have ups and downs so if the coach is riding the team during an upswing it can kill motivation in pretty much any work setting.
Work really hard in a stressful setting then when things go well for a little while the coach doesn't give a moment to destress from the disappointment and stress of the beginning of the season.
Yeah they get millions but they're also humans that react to situations just like any other person would.
