First of all, I want to say that I believed a Hartley system could would with the right group of players (maybe the Ducks' roster?)
But there were a lot of issues with it and these are the aspects of play that I think Treliving will want to address, that a guy like Randy Carylyle doesn't fit:
1) Highly controlled zone entries, with emphasis on a carry-in, and if no carry-in is there a lateral rotation of the puck to an opposite wing before a dump. These require constant repetition and set memorization.
2) Aggressive defensive system, with a body constantly on the man forcing quick decisions, even if it means the "risk" of getting caught out of position. Likewise, more "risky" zone exits through the middle of the ice. Don't get rid of the stretch pass entirely but have the center play deeper back at times.
3) Aggressive penalty kill, more like what we saw the second half of the season with all the shorties rather than the first half of the season.
4) Controlled line changes, you can change your lines without getting the puck deep from the red line - by passing the puck backwards or by taking the extra three strides to get the puck on net for a freeze. Also holding on to the puck in the perimeter of the offensive zone while bodies change out one-by-one rather than as a 3 / 5 man group.
5) Offensive posting on the corners. People think the Flames lost "battles" for pucks in recent years. Yes, they did to an extent, but more importantly they lost "races" for pucks because they emphasized inside slot position. The opponent would always have a two, three step head start to the walls because the Flames didn't keep anyone posted on the walls. It starts with a more aggressive 2-1-2 forecheck IMO
6) More confidence in less-obvious-choice defensemen (Hamilton, Nakladal, Kulak, and Wotherspoon) to make plays in the defensive zone rather than chip the puck out to exit.
I think those six things are going to be prerequisites in the "philosophy" of the next coach.
